My Perfect Family (Weeks 1-6)

My Perfect Family Connect Group guide

Healthy Relationships Begin at Home

Series Theme
No family is perfect—but every family can become healthier when Jesus is at the centre.

Key Verse

"See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!" — 1 John 3:1

Purpose of the Study

This isn't simply a Bible study. It is a discipleship journey.

Each week is designed to help people move from simply understanding God's family to intentionally building healthy relationships in every area of life.

Every session follows the same rhythm:

  1. Connect

  2. Discover

  3. Discuss

  4. Respond

  5. Pray

  6. Relationship Challenge

Leader's Guide (Every Week)

Before You Meet

  • Pray for every group member by name.

  • Read the week's sermon passage before the meeting.

  • Prepare one personal example to help break the ice.

During the Meeting

  • Create a safe environment where everyone has the opportunity to contribute.

  • Encourage discussion rather than teaching. Ask follow-up questions such as, "Can you tell us more?" or "What led you to that conclusion?"

  • Keep the conversation centred on Scripture and practical application.

End Every Meeting with Three Questions

  1. What is God saying to you through His Word?

  2. What is one step you will take this week?

  3. Who can encourage or keep you accountable?

WEEK ONE / Different but Family

Question Everyone Asks:

Where do I belong?

Main Scriptures

  • 1 John 3:1

  • Galatians 3:26-28

  • Romans 12:5

Connect

Tell everyone about a family tradition you grew up with that still makes you smile—or laugh.

Discover

Last Sunday we discovered that every person is searching for somewhere to belong.

Before God asks us to serve Him...

Before He asks us to change...

He welcomes us into His family.

Healthy relationships begin with secure identity.

When we know whose we are, we stop looking for approval everywhere else.

Read Together

Read 1 John 3:1 aloud.

Ask

What stands out to you most about this verse?

Discuss

Identity

  • Why do people spend so much of life trying to fit in?

  • How is belonging different from simply attending church?

  • What changes when we begin seeing ourselves as sons and daughters instead of spectators?

Family

  • What makes someone feel welcomed?

  • What behaviours make people feel like outsiders?

  • How can our Connect Group become more like family?

Application

Who helped you feel like you belonged when you first came to church?

How could you do that for someone else?

Respond

This week intentionally include someone.

Invite someone for coffee.

Sit with someone new.

Introduce yourself to someone you've seen but never met.

Healthy families always make room.

Prayer

Pray that every person would experience the Father's love and know they truly belong.

Relationship Challenge

Invite one new person into your world this week.

WEEK TWO / Come As You Are… Grow Together

Question Everyone Asks

How do I grow?

Scriptures

Romans 5:8

John 1:14

Ephesians 4:13-16

Connect

What's something you've become much better at than you were five years ago?

Discover

Healthy families don't expect perfection.

They encourage growth.

God welcomes us exactly as we are.

But because He loves us, He refuses to leave us where we are.

Growth was never designed to happen alone.

Read

Ephesians 4:13-16

Discuss

Grace

How has God's grace changed your life?

Truth

Why can truth sometimes feel uncomfortable?

Growth

Who has helped shape your faith?

Who are you helping grow?

What habits help people keep growing spiritually?

Respond

Choose one practical next step.

Join a ministry.

Start a Bible reading plan.

Meet with someone for accountability.

Invite someone into your journey.

Prayer

Pray for courage to keep growing.

Relationship Challenge

Ask someone this week:

"How can I encourage you in your faith?"

How do healthy people handle conflict?

Scriptures

James 1:19

Matthew 18:15-17

Romans 12:18

Ephesians 4:26-32

Connect

What's the funniest disagreement you've ever had with someone?

Discover

Every family experiences conflict.

Healthy families don't avoid conflict.

Healthy families learn how to resolve it.

Conflict isn't the enemy.

Unresolved conflict is.

Read

James 1:19-20

Discuss

What usually causes conflict?

How do people normally respond?

Fight?

Flight?

Freeze?

Forgiveness

Why is forgiveness difficult?

What's the difference between forgiveness and trust?

Communication

Why is listening harder than talking?

How can we speak truth without hurting people?

What would taking the first step look like?

Pray for healing, courage and reconciliation.

Relationship Challenge

Have one healthy conversation you've been putting off.

WEEK FOUR / Honour Above Me

Question Everyone Asks

How should healthy families treat one another?

Scriptures

Romans 12:10

Philippians 2:3-5

Ephesians 5:21

1 Peter 2:17

Connect

Who has shown you incredible honour in your life?

Discover

Our culture teaches people to demand honour.

Jesus teaches us to give honour.

Healthy relationships are built when everyone asks,

"How can I lift someone else?"

Read

Philippians 2:3-11

Discuss

What does honour actually look like?

Why do pride and honour struggle to coexist?

How does mutual submission strengthen relationships?

Where is honour needed most today?

Marriage?

Parenting?

Thank them.

Encourage them.

Celebrate them publicly.

Even Jesus regularly withdrew to rest, pray and reconnect with His Father.

Healthy relationships require healthy rhythms.

Read

Proverbs 4:23

Discuss

Where do people struggle most with boundaries?

Time?

Technology?

Work?

Family?

Ministry?

Why do people often feel guilty saying "no"?

How did Jesus demonstrate healthy boundaries?

Where might God be asking you to create healthier guardrails?
