Beyond the Cross Weeks 1-5 (Copy)

Week 1 - Easter - Three Crosses, One Decision

Easter - Three Crosses, One Decision

The Power of the Cross

Key Scriptures
Luke 23:39–43
2 Corinthians 5:21

Devotional

On the hill of Calvary stood three crosses.

In the middle was Jesus - the Son of God carrying the weight of humanity’s sin.

On one side was a criminal who mocked Him. On the other side was a criminal who recognised Him.

Both were equally close to Jesus. Both were equally guilty. But they responded differently.

One demanded proof.

The other admitted his need.

The first wanted salvation on his terms.

The second simply asked for mercy.

Jesus responded immediately:

"Today you will be with Me in paradise." (Luke 23:43)

The cross reveals something powerful: salvation is not earned, it is received.

Grace does what human effort never could.

“Our old history ends with the cross; our new history begins with the resurrection.”

  • Watchman Nee

Personal Reflection

Which of the two criminals do you most relate to right now?

Have you truly surrendered your life to Jesus or simply believed in Him intellectually?

What does the cross personally mean to you today?

Group Discussion

Why do you think the two criminals responded so differently to Jesus?

What does it look like in modern life to try to approach God on our own terms?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for the cross. Thank You that grace meets me in my brokenness. Help me approach You with humility and faith, receiving the salvation You freely give. Amen.

Week 2 - Free… Now What?

Salvation Is the Starting Line

Key Scriptures
Ephesians 2:8–10
Philippians 1:6

Devotional

Being saved is the greatest miracle of our lives.

But salvation is not the finish line - it is the starting line.

God doesn’t just save us from sin.

He saves us for transformation.

Too often, people accept Christ but stop short of spiritual growth. They experience forgiveness but never step into freedom.

God’s intention is bigger than survival.

He is shaping us into people who reflect Jesus.

Transformation takes intention. Growth requires participation.

God does the work in us, but we choose to cooperate with Him.

“The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life without purpose.”

  • Myles Munroe

Personal Reflection

In what areas of your life have you seen God changing you?

Where do you feel spiritually stagnant?

What might God be inviting you to grow in next?

Group Discussion

Why do you think some Christians stop growing spiritually after salvation?

What habits help you stay spiritually healthy?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that You are continuing the work You started in me. Help me grow intentionally and follow You wholeheartedly. Amen.

Week 3 - Freedom That Changes Relationships Healing the Way We Relate

Key Scriptures
John 8:36
Ephesians 4:31–32

Devotional

Freedom in Christ doesn’t stay private. It affects how we treat people.

Many people love Jesus but struggle in relationships because old wounds, anger, and insecurity still influence their reactions.

The gospel brings healing to the heart. Into the deeper areas of the soul if you are willing to embrace the journey.

When Jesus frees us, bitterness can be replaced with forgiveness, and anger can be replaced with grace.

Healthy relationships grow from healed hearts.

This is why discipleship includes emotional and relational transformation - not just spiritual belief.

“Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”

  • Nelson Mandela

Personal Reflection

Is there someone you need to forgive?

How have past experiences shaped the way you relate to people today?

Where do you need God’s healing in your relationships?

Group Discussion

Why is forgiveness often difficult even for believers?

What practical steps help build healthier relationships?

Prayer

Father, heal the places in my heart that affect the way I treat others. Help me love people the way You love me. Amen.

Week 4 - The Battle Within Walking in the Spirit

Key Scriptures
Galatians 5:16–17
Romans 8:5–6

Devotional

Every believer experiences an inner tension. Not a problem to solve but rather a tension to manage, every single day.

The Bible describes it as a struggle between the flesh and the Spirit.

The flesh represents our old nature - selfish desires, pride, and unhealthy habits.

The Spirit represents the new life God is forming in us.

This tension is not a sign of failure; it is evidence that transformation is happening.

Victory comes not through self-effort but through surrender to the Spirit’s leadership.

The more we cultivate our relationship with God, the stronger our spiritual life becomes.

“The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.”

  • Samuel Johnson

Personal Reflection

What spiritual habits help you stay connected to God?

Where do you notice the strongest battle between flesh and Spirit?

How can you intentionally walk in the Spirit this week?

Group Discussion

Why is spiritual growth a daily process rather than a one-time event?

What helps you resist unhealthy patterns?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, lead my life. Help me recognise the areas where I need Your strength and wisdom. Teach me to walk closely with You. Amen.

Week 5 - From Believer to Disciple Living a Life Fully Surrendered

Key Scriptures
Luke 9:23
Romans 12:1–2

Devotional

Many people believe in Jesus.

Fewer choose to fully follow Him. To actually disconnect from their own lives and truly surrender and submit to the way of Jesus.

Jesus described discipleship as taking up our cross daily. It means surrendering control and allowing God to shape every part of our lives.

Discipleship is not about perfection - it is about commitment.

When we surrender fully to Jesus, we begin to experience the freedom, purpose, and joy that He designed for us.

A transformed life becomes a powerful witness to others.

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

  • Jim Elliot

Personal Reflection

What does full surrender to Jesus look like in your life?

Is there an area you are still holding back from God?

What step could help you grow as a disciple this year?

Group Discussion

What is the difference between being a believer and being a disciple?

How can we encourage one another to keep growing spiritually?

Prayer

Jesus, I choose to follow You fully. Shape my life so that it reflects Your character and Your love to the world around me. Amen.

Final Reflection

The cross opened the door to freedom.

But the Christian life is about walking through that door every day - growing, healing, and becoming more like Jesus.

As you continue this journey, ask yourself regularly:

Am I growing in my faith?

Am I walking in the freedom Christ has given me?

Am I becoming more like Jesus?

The cross was the beginning. Your transformation continues beyond it.
